Was Yasharal 400 years or 430 years in Mitsyarim/ Egypt?

In Gen 15:13 Yahuah tells Abraham that his seed will be afflicted 400 years and Exo 12:40 records that Yasharal was afflicted 430 years. Is there a contradiction in scripture ? Not at all. This study is an exposition revealing how both 400 as well as 430 years is correct and will reveal the deep wisdom of Yahuah in giving us details of the affliction in relation to Abraham and his seed. Let's start.

In Genesis 15:13 we read Yahuah said to Abraham, Gen 15:13  And He said to Aḇram, “Know for certain that your seed are to be sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them, and they shall afflict them four hundred years.

This text raises the question whether the 400 years refers to the time of affliction or sojourning, or both, and what is the relation of the 400 years to the 430 years of Exodus 12:40, 41, and Galatians 3:16, 17?

Exo 12:40  And the sojourn of the children of Yisra’ěl who lived in Mitsrayim was four hundred and thirty years

Gal 3:16  But the promises were spoken to Aḇraham, and to his Seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,
who is Messiah.
Gal 3:17  Now this I say, Torah, that came four hundred and thirty years later, does not annul a covenant previously confirmed by Elohim in Messiah, so as to do away with the promise.

The verses we need to consider are the following: Genesis 15:13 Exodus 12:40-41; Acts 7:6-7, and Galatians 3:17.
Galatians 3:17 tells us that the full period of 430 years started from the covenant of grace given to Abraham and his seed.
Genesis 12 tells us that Alahym had called Abraham to leave his country, kindred, and father’s house to go into a land that Alahim would show him and later give to his seed as their promised inheritance.(Gen. 12:1-4)
The Call of Abram

Gen 12:1  And יהוה said to Aḇram, “Go yourself out of your land, from your relatives and from your father’s house, to a land which I show you.
Gen 12:2  “And I shall make you a great nation, and bless you and make your name great, and you shall be a blessing!
Gen 12:3  “And I shall bless those who bless you, and curse him who curses you. And in you all the clans of the earth shall be blessed.”
Gen 12:4  So Aḇram left, as יהוה had commanded him, and Lot went with him. And Aḇram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Ḥaran.
Gen 12:5  And Aḇram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the beings whom they had acquired in Ḥaran, and they set out for the land of Kena‛an. And they came to the land of Kena‛an

The solution here is that the period of 400 years affliction does not refer only to the time spent in bondage in Egypt. Abraham’s seed could not possibly have been there for 430 nor 400 years as the genealogies tell us.
According to Galatians 3:17 the 430 years began when Yahuah made a covenant with Abraham. Abraham was 75 when he left Haran to enter the land. Yashmael/Ishmael was born to Abraham when he was 86 (Gen. 16:16) and Yitsaq/Isaac was born when Abraham is 100 years old (Genesis 17:17)

Gen 16:16  And Aḇram was eighty-six years old when Haḡar bore Yishma‛ěl to Aḇram.

Ge 17:17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?
The “affliction” that the seed of Abraham endured was to occur over a span of 400 years.
During this time Yashmael/Ishmael, who "was born after the flesh persecuted him [Yitsaq/Isaac] that was born after the spirit" (Galatians 4:29; Genesis 21:9-11), beginning a time of affliction of Abraham's seed which intermittently would be continued until the time of the Exodus.

Gal 4:29  But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him born according to the Spirit, so also now.

Gen 21:9  And Sarah saw the son of Haḡar the Mitsrian, whom she had borne to Aḇraham, mocking.

Gen 21:10  So she said to Aḇraham, “Drive out this female servant and her son, for the son of this female servant shall not inherit with my son, with Yitsḥaq.”

Yitsaq/Isaac not only had troubles with his half brother Yashmael/Ishmael, but also with the Philistines (Genesis 26:15, 20, 21);

Gen 26:15  And the Philistines had stopped up all the wells which his father’s servants had dug in the days of Aḇraham his father, and filled them with dirt.
Gen 26:20  the herdsmen of Gerar strove with Yitsḥaq’s herdsmen, saying, “The water is ours.” And he called the name of the well Ěseq, because they strove with him.

Gen 26:21  And they dug another well, and they strove over that one too, and he called its name Sitnah.

Yaaqob/Jacob fled for his life from Esau (Genesis 27: 41-43)

Gen 27:41  And Ěsaw hated Ya‛aqoḇ because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Ěsaw said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father draw near, then I am going to kill my brother Ya‛aqoḇ.”
Gen 27:42  And the words of Ěsaw her older son were reported to Riḇqah, and she sent and called Ya‛aqoḇ her younger son, and said to him, “See, your brother Ěsaw comforts himself concerning you, to kill you.

Gen 27:43  “And now, my son, listen to my voice, and rise, flee to my brother Laḇan in Ḥaran.

and later from Laban (Genesis 31:21), and then was again in jeopardy from Esau (Genesis 32:8); Yoseph/Joseph was sold into slavery by his brethren (Genesis 37:28), and the children of Israel were oppressed by the Egyptians for many decades (Exodus 1:14).
Acts 7:6  “And Elohim spoke in this way: that his seed would be sojourning in a foreign land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
Acts 7:7  ‘And the nation to whom they shall be enslaved, I shall judge,’ said Elohim, ’and after that they shall come out and serve Me in this place.’
The time from Abraham's call to Yaaqob/Jacob's entry into Egypt was 215 years, being the total of :

(1)twenty five years lying between Abraham's call and the birth of Yitasaq/Issac (Gen 21:5) Abraham was 75 years when departed from Haran and 100 years old when Yitsaq/Isaac was born

 (2) Yitsaq/Issac was sixty years when Yaaqob/Jacob was born (Genesis 25:26), and

(3) the age of Yaaqob/Jacob at the time of his migration into Egypt (Genesis 47:9) i.e. he was 130 years.

This leaves the remaining 215 years of the 430 as the actual time the Hebrews spent in Mitsyarim/Egypt. Hence the 430 years of Exodus 12:40 includes the sojourn of the patriarchs in Canaan as well as their stay in Egypt.
Simple maths of 215 years : From Abraham's entry into Canaan (75 when he left Haran) to the birth of Yitsaq/Isaac was 25 years (100 years when Yitsaq/Isaac was born), Genesis 12:4; 17:1-21;

Yitsaq/Isaac was 60 years old at the birth of Yaaqob/Jacob, Genesis 25:26; and Yaaqob/Jacob was 130 at his going down into Mitsyarim/Egypt, Genesis 47:9; the sum makes 215 years. And then Yaaqob/Jacob and his children having continued in Egypt 215 years more, the whole sum of 430 years is regularly completed.
25+60+130=215
Now let's see how the other 215 years when Yasharal/Israel was in Mitsyarim/Egypt making it a total sojourn of 430 years:
Yoseph/Joseph was 39 years when Yaaqob/Jacob and all his sons came into Mitsyarim/Egypt and Yaaqob/Jacob was 130 years when he entered into Egypt.
Gen 47:8  And Pharaoh said to Ya‛aqoḇ, “How old are you?”
Gen 47:9  And Ya‛aqoḇ said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my sojournings are one hundred and thirty years. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojournings.”
Yoseph/Joseph was 30 years when he stood before Pharaoh and 39 when Yaaqob/Jacob entered Mitsyarim/Egypt with his sons.
Gen 41:46  Now Yosěph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh sovereign of Mitsrayim. And Yosěph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Mitsrayim.
How do we know that Yoseph/Joseph was 39 when Yaaqob/Jacob entered Mitsyarim/Egypt with his other sons?
Gen 41:54  and the seven years of scarcity of food began to come, as Yosěph had said. And the scarcity of food was in all lands, but in all the land of Mitsrayim there was bread.
He was 30 years when he stood before Pharaoh and 7 years of plentiful had passed so at the end of the 7 years of plentiful Joseph was 37 years.
Gen 45:6  For two years now the scarcity of food has been in the land, and there are still five years in which there is neither ploughing nor harvesting
2 years of famine was already in the land when Yoseph/Joseph reveals himself to his brothers and asks to get his father into Egypt which makes him 37+2=39
Gen 45:9  “Hurry and go up to my father, and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Yosěph, “Elohim has made me master of all Mitsrayim. Come down to me, do not delay.
Yoseph/Joseph dies at the age of 110 which means he rules for another 71 years from the time he is revealed to his brothers 110-39=71
Gen 50:26  And Yosěph died, being one hundred and ten years old. And they embalmed him, and he was placed in a coffin in Mitsrayim.
Yasharal lived in Egypt for 286 years at the time of the death of  Yoseph/Joseph 215+71=286.

We saw how we arrived at 215 years (from Abraham leaving Haran till Yaaqob/Jacob entering Egypt when Yaaqob/Jacob was 130 years and Joseph 39 years of age) plus the rule of Joseph after he was revealed to his brothers.

Only 64 years pass from the time Yoseph dies to when Masha was born.
71 (Yoseph ruled for another 71 years after Yaaqob and all sons came into Egypt) + 64 (Masha/Moses born) + 80 (Masha's age when he was before Pharaoh) = 215

How did we arrive at 64 when Masha/Moses was born, read on :)

Things to remember

1) Masha/Moses was 80 years old at the time of the Exodus (Ex 7:7)

Exo 7:7  Now Masha was eighty years old and Aharon eighty-three years old when they spoke to Pharaoh.

2) The time that Yasharal lived in Egypt was 430 years. (Ex. 12:40) was from Gen 12:1-4.

Yasharal lived in Egypt for 430 - 80 = 350 years (at the time of Moses birth) and Yoseph's death to birth of Moses 350-286=64

In summary to how we arrived at 430 years :

215 (25+60+130=215)+215 (71+64+80) =430 years with the sojourning as the starting point of the captivity (When Abraham left Haran to Yasharal out of Egypt)
Now let's see why Alahym tells Abraham that his seed will be a stranger in a land that is not theirs and shall be afflicted 400 years (Gen 15:13):
The 400 years are from the time Yitsaq/Isaac was weaned when he was 5 years old.

The reason we take 5 years is because of this evidence from scriptures

2Sa 4:4  Now Yehonathan, son of Sha’ul, had a son who was lame in his feet. He was five years old when the news about Sha’ul and Yehonathan came from Yizre‛ěl, and his nurse took him up and fled. And it came to be, as she hurried to flee, that he fell and became lame. And his name was Mephiḇosheth.

Mephibosheth was Yahunathan/Jonathan's son who became lame in the feet as his nurse dropped him. Many infants were assigned nurses especially those of royal ranks and Yahunathan/Jonathan was Saul's son (of royal rank as Saul was king) but usually the mother's nursed their own children. Here Mephiboseth was 5 years old and still was nursed which usually is an age of completion of Nursing and the child is WEANED.

Masha/Moses was also nursed:  Ex 2:9 And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give give you your wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it.

When a child completed weaning he was 5 years old and as per Yahudi/Jewish custom the parents went up to sacrifice and hence we see Hannah do the same. Also we see Abraham make a feast because now his child is not under NURSING

Gen 21:8  And the child grew and was weaned, and Aḇraham made a great feast on the day that Yitsḥaq was weaned.

1Sa 1:23  And her husband Elqanah said to her, “Do what is good in your eyes. Remain until you have weaned him. Only let יהוה establish His word.” And the woman remained and nursed her son until she had weaned him.
1Sa 1:24  And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls,a and one ěphah of flour, and a skin of wine, and brought him to the House of יהוה in Shiloh. And the child was young.
400 years of captivity from Yashmael/Ishmael mocking Yitsaq/Isaac (children of flesh persecuting the children of promise as stated by Paul in Gal 4:29)
Ge 21:8 And the child grew, and was weaned: and Abraham made a great feast the same day that Isaac was weaned. 9 ¶ And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking.
25 years after Abraham left Haran (when he was 75 years old) Isaac was born (i.e. when he was 100 years old) and when Isaac was 5 years old (weaned). So 25+5=30 and 430-30=400
Ga 4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.
The promise took effect when Yashmael/Ishmael the son of the bondwoman was cast out.
Gen 21:10  So she said to Aḇraham, “Drive out this female servant and her son, for the son of this female servant shall not inherit with my son, with Yitsḥaq.”
Gal 4:30  But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the female servant and her son, for the son of the female servant shall by no means be heir with the son of the free woman.”
So both 430 and 400 are correct. The 430 years is in context from Abraham commanded to leave his father's house and was sojourning and the 400 years is in context from Yitsaq/Isaac when he was 5 years old when the promise took effect.
If we read what Paul is saying, he is talking about the covenant being confirmed and this covenant was made to Abraham when he was 75 years old Gen 12:1-4
Ga 3:17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of Alahym in Mashiyach, the Torah, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
From the time Yasharal was formed (the covenant of Genesis 12) to the death of Yoseph was 25 + 60 plus +130 + 71 = 286 years.

When calculating the Great Tribulation Alahym mentions Abraham in the 430 years because he obeyed Alahym and was a pilgrim leaving his father's house desiring the heavenly country.

Consider these passages:

Heb 11:8  By belief, Aḇraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he was about to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
Heb 11:9  By belief, he/Abraham sojourned in the land of promise as a stranger, dwelling in tents with Yitsḥaq and Ya‛aqoḇ, the heirs with him of the same promise

Heb 11:10  for he was looking for the city having foundations, whose builder and maker is Elohim.

Now keeping the principle in mind let us see how we arrive at Daniel's 1290 days where we see the third refined through the fire

Dan 12:11  “And from the time that which is continual is taken away, and the abomination that lays waste is set up, is one thousand two hundred and ninety days.

Zec 13:9  “And I shall bring the third into fire, and refine them as silver is refined, and try them as gold is tried. They shall call on My Name,b and I shall answer them. I shall say, ‘This is My people,’ while they say, ‘יהוה is my Elohim.’

(430*3 =1290)

Let's view the covenant Alahym made with Abraham's seed in the same light. Remember I shared in my previous studies that when we apply this numbers to our time they are pure SPIRITUAL NUMBERS and have nothing to do with any MAN MADE CALENDAR's or TIME LINES

Ge 15:13 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that your seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

Gal 3:16  But the promises were spoken to Aḇraham, and to his Seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Messiah.

Gal 3:29  And if you are of Messiah, then you are seed of Aḇraham, and heirs according to promise.

So the seed of Abraham is Mashiyach and we who are in Mashiyach are counted for the seed in Yitsaq,

Gal 4:28  And we, brothers, as Yitsḥaq was, are children of promise.

Gal 4:31  Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the female servant but of the free woman.

We saw in this study that the 430 years of sojourn includes Abraham and the 400 is purely his SEED i.e. when Issac was 5 and that's when the bondwoman and her son were cast off. This means that the Covenant with the seed was in effect when the bondwoman and her son were cast out because it cannot with both under the same roof.

And hence when we see 400*3 =1200 (12* 100) and if we search in Alahym's word what numbers mean spiritually we see the number 12 which speaks of Alahym's people. Example: 12 tribes, 12 apostles and the number 10, 100 and 1000 as completeness.

Examples: Number 12

a hundred and forty four thousand is not a literal number but the entire body of Messiah 12 *12 * 1000 where the number 12 twice stands for 12 patriarchs tribes and the other number 12 stands for 12 apostles and the assembly

Re 7:4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed an hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Yasharal.

Ac 1:15 ¶ And in those days Kepha/Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,) (12 *10)

Re 12:1 ¶ And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars

Rev 7: from each tribe 12,000 being sealed

These are few examples as to how number 12 is used in scripture and there are many more.

Examples: Number 10, 100 and 1000

10:

Re 2:10 Fear none of those things which you shall suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that you may be tried; and you shall have tribulation ten days: be faithful unto death, and I will give you a crown of life.

Mashiyach is not telling his assembly that their tribulation will be just 10 days but for a complete time

100:  Mt 18:12 How think you? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, does he not leave the ninety and nine, and goes into the mountains, and seeks that which is gone astray?

The passage means Mashiyach will not allow even 1 sheep to go astray and hence 99+1 =100 which is the complete number

1000:  Ps 50:10 For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

Does this passage mean that only the cattle on the 1000 hills belong to Alahym? Is Alahym not the possessor of heaven and earth? So the 1000 hills means ALL hills.

Now coming back to 400*3 we see the Abrahamic covenant to ALL OF HIS SEED through Mashiyach who is the SEED and we in him.

Gal 4:28  And we, brothers, as Yitsḥaq was, are children of promise.
