When we read the blessings given to the twelve tribes in Genesis 49 we see two tribes Yahudah and Yoseph being made the promise of the Ruler i.e. Mashiyach coming from them. Is there a contradiction? A carnal eye would see a contradiction but when we look at scriptures deeply we will see both are correct and this study is to show just how Yahuah fulfilled his promise to Yahudah as well as Yoseph. Let's get straight into the scriptures to see just how. Firstly we will see Yaaqob telling his sons what is going to befall them in the last days.
Gen 49:1 Then Ya’aqob called unto his sons and said, Assemble yourselves that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days.
Yaaqob's blessing for Yahudah:
Gen 49:9 Yahudah is a lion’s whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He couches, he lies down as a lion, and as a old lion, who dares rouse him up?
Gen 49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Yahudah, nor the lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
Gen 49:11 He ties his foal to the vine, and his donkey’s colt to the choice vine; he washes his garments in wine, and his robes in the blood of grapes.
Gen 49:12 His eyes are dull from wine, and his teeth white from milk.
Yaaqob's blessing for Yoseph:
Gen 49:22 Yoseph is a son of the fruitful bough, a son of a fruitful bough by a spring; its branches run over a wall
Gen 49:23 The masters of arrows harass him, and shoot and lie in wait for him;
Gen 49:24 But his bow abides in strength, and the hands of his arms were agile, from the hands of the Mighty One of Ya’aqob from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Yisra’El
Gen 49:25 from El of your father who helps you, and by the Almighty who blesses you with blessings of heavens above, blessings of the deep that lies beneath, blessings of the breasts and of the womb.
Gen 49:26 The blessings of your father have surpassed the blessings of my ancestors up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills; may they be on the head of Yoseph, and on the crown of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers.
Gen 48:22 “And I, I have given to you (Yoseph) one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.”
Let's look at each promise closely and then let's see a scriptural fulfillment of those promises made to Yahudah and Yoseph. When we read the blessing of Yahudah the promise reads ''Gen 49:10 The scepter shall not depart from Yahudah, nor the lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.''
Who was Shiloh/Shaylah?
Gen 38:6 And Yehuḏah took a wife for Ěr his first-born, and her name was Tamar.
Gen 38:7 But Ěr, Yehuḏah’s first-born, was evil in the eyes of יהוה, and יהוה took his life.
Gen 38:8 And Yehuḏah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.”
Gen 38:9 And Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. And it came to be, when he went in to his brother’s wife, that he spilled on the ground, lest he should give an offspring to his brother.
Gen 38:10 But what he did displeased יהוה, so He took his life too.
Gen 38:11 Then Yehuḏah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house until my son Shĕlah is grown.” For he said, “Lest he also die as his brothers did.” And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.
Yahudah had three sons and Er was evil in the sight of Yahuah and Yahuah took his life, his brother acted wickedly by not raising a seed for his dead brother and emitted on the ground because of which Yahuah took his life. Onan knew that the child born to Tamar would not be his but his dead brothers and he broke the dabar of Yahuah which came from the fathers to their children which later was confirmed by the Turah which came written in letter. Yahudah was grieved and promised Tamar to wait till his son Shalah/Shaylah grows up so that he could raise his seed for his dead brother but later he forgot his promise because of which Tamar acted like a harlot and got her seed directly from her father in law.
Gen 38:25 She was being brought out that she sent to her father-in-law, saying, I am with child by the man to whom these things belong to him. And she said, Please examine and see, whose signet ring and cords and staff are these?
Gen 38:26 Yahudah recognized them, and said, She is more righteous than I, inasmuch as I did not give her to my son Shalah. And he did not have relations with her again.
The name Tamar means 'palm tree/erect' and her name itself shows her uprightness.
The name 'Shalah/Shaylah' means to draw out
While Yahudah's earthly son Shalah/Shaylah couldn't give his dead brother a seed to end his brother's wife's widowhood, the promise is of Mashiyach who would 'Shalah/draw out' a seed from Tamar/Erect which is qodesh and will give life.
Eze 41:18 And it was made with keruḇim and palm trees/tamarah, and a palm tree/tamar between keruḇ and keruḇ. A keruḇ had two faces,
Eze 41:19 so that the face of a man was toward a palm tree on one side, and the face of a young lion toward a palm tree on the other side – made on all the House all around.
The spiritual haykal/temple which Ezekiel saw had on the most set apart place kerubims and in between the kerubims was a palm tree/tamar which the face of one kerub of man facing towards a palm tree/tamar and the face of a lion facing the palm tree on the other side.
Gen 49:9 Yahudah is a lion’s whelp; from the prey, my son, you have gone up. He couches, he lies down as a lion, and as a old lion, who dares rouse him up?
HalaluYah the lion of Yahudah as a man faces Tamar to end her widowhood and purchase her to be his bride.
Now let's look at the blessing of Yoseph closely:
Gen 48:22 “And I, I have given to you (Yoseph) one portion above your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.”
Yoseph was given one portion above his brothers and we see this in Genesis 48 how Yaaqob tells Yoseph that his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim will be counted as tribes in Yasharal.
Gen 48:5 Now your two sons, who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I came to you in Egypt, are mine; they, Ephrayim and Manasseh, like Reuben and Shimeon shall be mine.
Gen 48:6 But your offspring that have been born after them shall be yours; they shall be called by the names of their brothers in their inheritance.
There is a spiritual significance in the names Ephrayim and Manasseh
Ephrayim: Ephrayim means doubly fruitful
Yoseph's blessing was that he will be a fruitful bough
Gen 49:22 Yoseph is fruitful/parat H6509 son/ban H1121, a fruitful/parat H6509 son/ban H1121 by a spring; its branches run over a wall.
If you notice in the above verse it's mentioned twice that Yoseph is a parat ban a parat ban which means a fruitful son and Ephrayim exactly means ''I shall be doubly fruitful'' and parat is the root word in Ephrathah which was a part of the name of Bethlehem where our Mashiyach Yahusha was born.
Mich 5:2 “But you, Bĕyth Leḥem Ephrathah, you who are little among the clans of Yahuḏah, out of you shall come forth to Me the One to become Ruler in Yisra’ĕl. And His comings forth a are of old, from everlasting.”
'Parat' H6509 which means 'fruitful' is a root word in 'Ephrath'
HalalUYah there is so much depth in the wisdom of Yahuah hidden in his dabar.
Matt 2:4 So he assembled all the leading priests and scribes of the people, inquired of them, saying, Where will the Mashiyach be born?
Matt 2:5 They told him, In Beyith-Lechem of Yahudah; for this is how it was written by the hand of the prophet:
Matt 2:6 And you, Beyith-Lechem, land of Yahudah, are not least among the chiefs of Yahudah; for from you shall go forth a ruler who shall shepherd My people Yisrael.
It's interesting to see the same word 'parat' H6578 is the river Euphrates and it's spoken of Euphrates to be the border of the land of Yasharal as promised to Abraham.
Gen 15:18 On the same day יהוה made a covenant with Aḇram, saying, “I have given this land to your seed, from the river of Mitsrayim to the great river, the River Euphrates/Parat,
Also in the last days it's spoken of Euphrates/Parat to be dried up to make way for the kings of the east to make war with Yasharal. These are spiritual things which need to be understood spiritually.
Re 16:12 ¶ And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates/Parats; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.
Manasseh:
While Yoseph named his elder son Manasseh because he Alahym made him forget all his toil and his father's house, the name Manasseh has a deep spiritual meaning embedded in it
Gen 41:51 And Yosĕph called the name of the first-born Menashsheh, “For Elohim has made me forget all my toil and all my father’s house.”
Gen 41:52 And the name of the second he called Ephrayim, “For Elohim has caused me to bear fruit in the land of my affliction.”
There are several root words in the name Manasseh, man/kind of, man/portion, mana/bread from heaven, manah/numbering (The grouping together and counting of those that are of the same kind), nash/loan or debt, nasha/forget
The kind of bread of heaven given to those of the same kind grouped together whose loan or debt or toil was caused to forget.
While Manasseh was the eldest son of Yoseph, Ephrayim got the status of the firstborn.
Jer 31:8 “See, I am bringing them from the land of the north, and shall gather them from the ends of the earth, among them the blind and the lame, those with child and those in labour, together – a great assembly returning here.
Jer 31:9 “With weeping they shall come, and with their prayers I bring them. I shall make them walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they do not stumble. For I shall be a Father to Yisra’ĕl, and Ephrayim – he is My first-born.
Speaking of gathering Yasharal from the land of the north (Babylon) and from the ends of the earth Yahuah says with weeping they shall come and make them walk by the rivers of waters and in a straight way in which they do not stumble, here Yahuah says Ephrayim is his firstborn.
Coming back to the blessing of Yoseph
Gen 48:13 Yoseph took them both, Ephrayim with his right hand toward Yisra’El’s left, and Manasseh with his left hand toward Yisra’El’s right, and brought them close to him.
Gen 48:14 But Yisra’El stretched out his right hand and laid it on the head of Ephrayim, who was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head, by understanding/sakal his alaph tau hands/yadayu although Manasseh was the firstborn.
Gen 48:15 He blessed Yoseph, and said, The Elohim in His presence whom my fathers Abraham and Yitschaq walked, the Elohim who has been my shepherd from my youth to this day,
Gen 48:16 The angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and may my name live on in them, and the names of my fathers Abraham and Yitschaq; And may they grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
Gen 48:17 When Yoseph saw that his father laid his right hand on Ephrayim’s head, it displeased him; and he grasped his father’s hand to remove it from Ephrayim’s head to Manasseh’s head.
Gen 48:18 Yoseph said to his father, Not so, my father, for this one is the firstborn. Place your right hand on his head.
Gen 48:19 But his father refused and said, I know, my son, I know; he also shall become a people and he also shall be great. But his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations.
Gen 48:20 He blessed them that day, saying, By you Yisra’El shall bless, saying, May Elohim make you like Ephrayim and like Manasseh! Thus he put Ephrayim before Manasseh.
Gen 48:22 I give you one portion more than your brothers, which I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
While there are many alaph tau before certain words in the above verses it's noteworthy to see the alaph tau before the word 'yadau' which means hands. And the hands of Yaaqob were by understanding placed over Ephrayim and Manasseh, the Abary word for understanding is 'sakal
Sakal: Understanding
Yaaqob was on his death bed and his eyes were dim but in this state he got deep spiritual understanding from Yahuah.
Gen 48:10 Now the eyes of Yisra’El were so dim from age that he was not able to see. Then he brought them close to him, and he kissed them and embraced them.
So we see the background of the blessings received by Yahudah and Yoseph which shows the springing forth of Mashiyach. We saw through Tamar/Palm tree would spring forth the seed (Mashiyach) through Yahudah who gave seed to his dead son as Shaylah.
Yoseph would be a parat/fruitful son and his son Ephrayim/ Doubly fruitful as we saw in Gen 49:22 where it says of Yoseph to be parat ban twice. Also Gen 48:22 where Yahuah through Yaaqob tells him that his portion would be one portion more than his brothers. We saw the fulfillment as prophesied in Micah 5:2 about Bethlehem Ephrath being among the clans of Yahudah
Mic 5:2 “But you, Bĕyth Leḥem Ephrathah, you who are little among the clans of Yehuḏah...
Thus we see Ephrayim and Yahudah coming together with a One blessing from where Yahusha would spring forth.
Two sticks one:
Eze 37:15 And the word of יהוה came to me, saying,
Eze 37:16 “And you, son of man, take a stick for yourself and write on it, ‘For Yehuḏah and for the children of Yisra’ĕl, his companions.’ Then take another stick and write on it, ‘For Yosĕph, the stick of Ephrayim, and for all the house of Yisra’ĕl, his companions.’
Eze 37:17 “Then bring them together for yourself into one stick, and they shall become one in your hand.
Eze 37:18 “And when the children of your people speak to you, saying, ‘Won’t you show us what you mean by these?’
Eze 37:19 say to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “See, I am taking the stick of Yosĕph, which is in the hand of Ephrayim, and the tribes of Yisra’ĕl, his companions. And I shall give them unto him, with the stick of Yehuḏah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in My hand.” ’
Eze 37:20 “And the sticks on which you write shall be in your hand before their eyes.
Eze 37:21 “And speak to them, ‘Thus said the Master יהוה, “See, I am taking the children of Yisra’ĕl from among the gentiles, wherever they have gone, and shall gather them from all around, and I shall bring them into their land.
Eze 37:22 “And I shall make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Yisra’ĕl. And one sovereign shall be sovereign over them all, and let them no longer be two nations, and let them no longer be divided into two reigns.
Fulfillment of the two sticks made one:
Rutc1:2 The name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife, Naomi; and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Bethlehem in Yahudah. Now they entered the field of Moab and remained there
Elimelech had two sons Mahlon and Chilion and they were Ephrathites of Begthlehem in Yahudah. Ruth was the widow of Mahlon and as per Turah there was no one other son to Naomi to raise seed for Ruth since she chose to cling to Yahuah and his people. So when they returned to Yasharal she proposed that Boaz her husband's nearest kinsman/relative redeem Ruth to be his wife
Rut 2:1 Now Naomi had a kinsman of her husband, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz.
Rut 4:10 Moreover, Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, I have purchased for myself for a wife to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance, so that the name of the deceased shall not be cut off from his brothers or from the gate of his place; you are witnesses today.
So it's evident that Ruth was the wife of Mahlon the Ephrathite (from Ephrayim)
Where was Boaz from?
The genealogy of Matthew 1 shows that Boaz was from Yahudah
Mat 1:1 The book of the genealogy of יהושע Messiah, Son of Dawiḏ, Son of Aḇraham:
Mat 1:2 Aḇraham brought forth Yitsḥaq, and Yitsḥaq brought forth Yaʽaqoḇ, and Yaʽaqoḇ brought forth Yehuḏah and his brothers.
Mat 1:3 And Yehuḏah brought forth Perets and Zeraḥ by Tamar, and Perets brought forth Ḥetsron, and Ḥetsron brought forth Ram.
Mat 1:4 And Ram brought forth Amminaḏaḇ, and Amminaḏaḇ brought forth Naḥshon, and Naḥshon brought forth Salmon.
Mat 1:5 And Salmon brought forth Boʽaz by Raḥaḇ, and Boʽaz brought forth Oḇĕḏ by Ruth, and Oḇĕḏ brought forth Yishai.
Mat 1:6 And Yishai brought forth Dawiḏ the sovereign, and Dawiḏ the sovereign brought forth Shelomoh by Uriyah’s wife.
The lineage:
Yahudah-Peretz-Hetsron-Ram-Amminadab-Nashon-Salmon-Boaz-Obed (through Ruth)-Yishai-Dawid
Rth 4:13 And Boʽaz took Ruth and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and יהוה granted her conception, and she bore a son.
Rth 4:14 And the women said to Naʽomi, “Blessed be יהוה, who has not left you this day without a redeemer. And let his Name be proclaimed in Yisra’ĕl!
Rth 4:15 “And he shall be to you a restorer of life and a sustainer of your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him.”
Rth 4:16 And Naʽomi took the child and laid him on her bosom, and became a nurse to him.
Rth 4:17 And the women, her neighbours, gave him a name, saying, “There is a son born to Naʽomi.” And they called his name Oḇĕḏ. He was the father of Yishai, the father of Dawiḏ.
Thus we see the seed of Yahudah- Boaz and the wife of the dead Ephrathite Ruth coming together to bring forth the stem of Yishai
Isa 11:1 And a stem shall come forth from the stump of Yishai, and a Sprout from his roots shall bear fruit.
Isa 11:2 The Spirit of יהוה shall rest upon Him – the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of יהוה,
Isa 11:3 and shall make Him breathe in the fear of יהוה. And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears.
We see Yahudite Boaz purchasing Ruth the wife of Mahlon as per Yahuah's dabar because Elimelech's closest relative couldn't redeem her to give her dead husband a seed. We see Boaz says in Ruth 4:10 that he has purchased for himself for a wife to raise up the name of the deceased on his inheritance so that the name of the deceased shall not be cut off from his brothers.
1 Sam 17:12 Now Dawiḏ was the son of that Ephrathite of Bĕyth Leḥem in Yehuḏah, whose name was Yishai, and he had eight sons, and in the days of Sha’ul the man was old among men
That;s how we see Yahusha is called as Son of Dawid.
Rev 22:16 “I, יהושע, have sent My messenger to witness to you these matters in the assemblies. I am the Root and the Offspring of Dawiḏ, the Bright and Morning Star.”
Rev 5:5 And one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. See, the Lion of the tribe of Yehuḏah, the Root of Dawiḏ, overcame to open the scroll and to loosen its seven seals.
The custom of redemption to give seed to the widow of the dead husband:
Deu 25:5 “When brothers dwell together, and one of them has died, and has no son, the widow of the dead man shall not become a stranger’s outside. Her husband’s brother does go in to her, and shall take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.
Deu 25:6 “And it shall be that the first-born son which she bears does rise up for the name of his dead brother, so that his name is not blotted out of Yisra’ĕl.
Deu 25:7 “But if the man does not desire to take his brother’s wife, then let his brother’s wife go up to the gate to the elders, and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to raise up a name to his brother in Yisra’ĕl, he does not agree to perform the duty of my husband’s brother.’
Deu 25:8 “The elders of his city shall then call him and speak to him, and he shall stand and say, ‘I have no desire to take her,’
Deu 25:9 then his brother’s wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders, and remove his sandal/ naal H5275 from his foot, and shall spit in his face, and answer and say, ‘Thus it is done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.’
Naal:
Al (ayin lamed) form the word 'rise'. It's a root word in malah which is translated as ascending.
The nun /seed is trying to ascend. Shoe/naal had an important role in the Turah.
If the widow was not redeemed by her dead husbands brother who refused to give her a seed she was to remove his sandal /naal and spit on him in front of the elders.
Ruth 4:6 And the redeemer said, “I am not able to redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. Redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I am not able to redeem it.”
7 And this was formerly done in Yisra’ĕl concerning redeeming and exchanging, to confirm every word: one man took off his sandal/naal and gave it to the other, and this was a witness in Yisra’ĕl.
8 So the redeemer said to Boʽaz, “Buy it for yourself.” Then he took off his sandal/naal H5275
The seed of the dead husband rose through Boaz who redeemed her. Didn't Yahuchanan say he is not worthy to untie Yahushas sandals? So the seed rising is Mashiyach.
Matt 3:11 See, I am immersing you with water for repentance, but the one coming after me is mightier than I am, whose sandals/naalayu I am not worthy to carry; He shall immerse you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Aluahym in his wisdom has woven this.
Ps 108:9 Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I cast out my shoe/naal; over Philistia will I triumph.
Why is Yahuah saying over Edom he will cast out his shoe? Because Edom is Esau who despised his birthright/bakarah
Gen 25:31 But Yaʽaqoḇ said, “Sell me your birthright/bakarah today.”
Gen 25:32 And Ěsaw said, “Look, I am going to die, so why should I have birthright/bakarah?”
Gen 25:33 Then Yaʽaqoḇ said, “Swear to me today.” And he swore to him, and sold his birthright/bakarah to Yaʽaqoḇ.
Gen 25:34 Yaʽaqoḇ then gave Ěsaw bread and stew of lentils. And he ate and drank, and rose up and left. Thus Ěsaw despised his birthright/bakarah H1062.
The Abary word bakar means 'firstfruits' and despising the firstfruits is despising Mashiyach. Esaw's had the potential as the elder son to bring forth the 'firstfruits' (Mashiyach) but he despised it and sold it to his younger brother and what he gets is a casting of a shoe/naal from Yahuah himself for spiritually he refused raising the seed.
Gen 49:23 The masters of arrows harass him, and shoot and lie in wait for him;
Gen 49:24 But his bow abides in strength, and the hands of his arms were agile, from the hands of the Mighty One of Ya’aqob from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Yisra’El

Ephrath: a place of fruitfulness
The sealing of the 12 tribes:
Rev 7:5 From the tribe of YAHUDAH (two sticks were made one EPHRAIM), twelve thousand were sealed, from the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand, from the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand,
Rev 7:6 from the tribe of Asher were sealed twelve thousand, from the tribe of Naphtali were sealed twelve thousand, from the tribe of MANASSEH were sealed twelve thousand
Rev 7:7 from the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand, from the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand, from the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand,
Rev 7:8 from the tribe of Zebulun were sealed twelve thousand, from the tribe of YOSEPH were sealed twelve thousand, from the tribe of Benyamin, twelve thousand were sealed.
Rev 7:9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands;
Ephraim is not listed in the genealogy because with Yahudah he was made one, Aluahym kept his promise to Yoseph that he would have a portion above his brothers and hence his name and his sons name Manasseh is listed
May Yahuah barak all those who understand this mystery.
