The parable of the Sower and scattering of seed

Mat 13:1  And on that day יהושע went out of the house and sat by the sea.

Mat 13:2  And large crowds were gathered together to Him, so that He went into a boat and sat down. And all the crowd stood on the beach.

Mat 13:3  And He spoke to them much in parables, saying, “See, the Sower went out to sow.

Mat 13:4  “And as he sowed, some indeed fell by the wayside, and the birds came and devoured them.

Mat 13:5  “And others fell on rocky places, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil.

Mat 13:6  “But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered.

Mat 13:7  “And others fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them.

Mat 13:8  “And others fell on good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Mat 13:9 “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

This parable appears in 3 bashara’s Matthew (13:1-9), Mark (4:1-9) & Luke (8:1-8) and is significant beyond what Mashiyach explained to his talmidim post quoting the parable in all 3 accounts.

Mat 13:3  And He spoke to them much in parables, saying, “See, the sower went out to sow

Remember, parables are an earthly story with a heavenly meaning and the talmidim of Yahusha were babes at that time, the parable was explained as to a babe. Strong meat belongs to those whose senses have been trained by practice to discern both good and evil.and I’m sure the talmidim understood the parable more deeply later as we are going to see in this study.

Heb 5:13  For everyone partaking of milk is inexperienced in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.

Heb 5:14  But solid food is for the mature whose senses have been trained by practice to discern both good and evil.

Since the parable appears in 3 basarah accounts, number 3 in scripture speaks of the will of Yahuah sealed & concealed.

Kepha saw the vessel with unclean creatures in it 3 times in a vision and later it was revealed to him the unclean creatures are the Gentiles who would be cleansed in belief in Mashiyach and be saved

Act 10:16  And this took place three times, and the vessel was taken back to the heaven.

2Co 12:8  Concerning this I pleaded with the Master three times to take it away from me

Shaul the emissary for receiving revelation received a thorn in the flesh which he pleaded with the ADON to take it away from him, but the ADON told him ‘’My favour is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness’’

Firstly, we must understand sowing is done bending down , hence the Sower bends down and plants the seed in the ground, here, it says as he sowed, some indeed fell by the wayside. Which means the Sower was indeed bending to sow the seed in the soil in a direction and as he came to the side of the field sowing, some seed fell by the wayside, some on rock and some among thorns & some among good soil

Mat 13:4  “And as he sowed, some indeed fell by the wayside, and the birds came and devoured them

Mat 13:5  “And others fell on rocky places, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil.

Mat 13:7  And others fell among thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them.

Mat 13:8  “And others fell on good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

The word for fell in Hebrew is naphal H5307 and it also means ‘untimely birth’ H5309. Hence, this was the fallen seed, but whose seed is what we should look at.

We can see this from the parables in the outcome of the fallen seed on good soil:

Mat 13:8  “And others fell on good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.

Mar 4:8  “And other fell on good soil and yielded a crop that came up, grew and yielded a crop, some thirtyfold, and some sixty, and some a hundred.”

Luk 8:8  “And other fell on the good soil, and grew up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold.” Having said this He cried, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

Mark records the order of fruitfulness as thirty, sixty & hundredfold, while Matthew records the reverse order hundredfold, sixty & thirty. Luke records only hundredfold. There is a mystery in understanding this number. We can only understand if we see the usage of the seed in scripture indicating whose seed this is. The promise came to Abraham that his seed will be multiplied as the stars in the sky and sand on the seashore. Without tying this to Abraham, we will never be able to conclude the usage of the numbers 100, 60 & 30 anywhere else in Torah, Nebim, Kethubim and the Renewed Covenant. Let’s see how.

Gen 21:5  And Araham was one hundred years old when his son Yitsaq was born to him.

Gen 25:26  And afterward his brother came out, with his hand holding on to Ěsaw’s heel, so his name was called Ya‛aqo. And Yitsaq was sixty years old when she bore them.

Yitshaq’s son Yaaqob had 12 sons and the one chosen for priesthood was Levi whose seed was chosen at age thirty

Num 4:1  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, and to Aharon, saying,

Num 4:2  “Take a census of the sons of Qehath from among the children of Lěwi, by their clans, by their fathers’ house,

Num 4:3  from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, all who enter the service to do the work in the Tent of Appointment.

Num 4:4  “This is the service of the sons of Qehath in the Tent of Appointment, the most set-apart matters:

The Levitical priesthood was to see a sunset when Mashiyach would come with the Malchitsedek priesthood, and the ADON would spring up from the tribe of Yahudah, a tribe never mentioned by Masha for priesthood.

Heb 7:14  For it is perfectly clear that our Master arose from Yehuah, a tribe about which Mosheh never spoke of concerning priesthood,

The Malchitsedek priest Yahusha fulfilled Torah qualification of a kohen to be 30 years and above and He was that fruitful seed which emissary Shaul spoke of.

Luk 3:23  And when יהושע Himself began, He was about thirty years of age, being, as reckoned by law, son of Yosěph, of Ěli,

Gal 3:16  But the promises were spoken to Araham, and to his Seed. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,” who is Messiah

Hence, we get our 100, 60 & 30 from here as stated by Matthew. Matthew shows the descent while Mark shows the progressive growth of the seed into the fullness of being the promised seed of Abraham 30, 60 & 100. Luke shows the fullness in Abraham through Mashiyach and hence, says hundredfold. Matthew in the genealogy begins the descent from Abraham to Mashiyach (Matthew 1). Mark doesn’t mention any genealogy, but Luke mentions and ascent genealogy in reverse i.e., from Mashiyach to Adam. Luke was a close companion of Shaul, while John Mark had left them on their journey, later Shaul asks to bring him along in the journey

Luke fills in for John Mark in revealing the genealogy in ascent order as the focus with the goal as 100 fold.

Act 15:36  And after some days Sha’ul said to Barnaa, “Let us now go back and visit our brothers in every city where we proclaimed the Word of יהוה, and see how they are.”

Act 15:37  And Barnaa purposed to take with them Yoanan called Marqos.

Act 15:38  But Sha’ul thought it not fit to take with them the one who withdrew from them in Pamphulia, and had not gone with them to the work.

Act 15:39  A sharp feeling therefore came to be, so that they parted from one another. And so Barnaa took Marqos and sailed to Cyprus.

Act 15:40  And Sha’ul chose Silas and went off, being committed by the brothers to the favour of Elohim.

Now to understand the parable with the spiritual understanding:

1.   The seed that fell by the wayside:

The zera/seed naphal/fell `al-yad/from the hand away from hadare’k/the way

The way is the way of Torah and the seed fell away from the way, the winged creatures/auph came and devoured it. Mashiyach went on to explain this is Satan.

Mat 13:19  “When anyone hears the word of the reign, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is that sown by the wayside.

As I said before, Mashiyach explained this parable to babes and hence, mentions the seed as the word/dabar with the soil as the heart. A deeper understanding shows the good/tub soil/adamah is heavenly as in the garden of Eden pruned and taken care by Yahuah as in the Sabbath years rest. For details kindly refer to the parable ‘The scattering of the seed’ below

The parable of the scattering of seed:

Mark 4: 26 And He said, “The reign of Elohim is as when a man scatters seed on the ground,

27 then sleeps by night and rises by day, while the seed sprouts and grows, he himself does not know how.

28 “For the soil yields crops by itself: first the blade, then the head, after that the completed grain in the head.

29 “And when the crop is ready, immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.”

Yahusha spoke in parables and every parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning.

The man/adam scattered seed on the ground/adamah

And adam sleeps by night and rises by day while the seed sprouts and grows and doesn't know how. Wasn't Adam designed to till the ground? If he tills the ground, he will observe and know

Gen 3:23 so יהוה Elohim sent him(adam) out of the garden of Ěḏen to till the ground from which he was taken,

24 and He drove the man out. And He placed keruḇim at the east of the garden of Ěḏen, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.

Gen 2: 5 Now no shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for יהוה Elohim had not sent rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground,

Adam was designed to till the ground as before he was created there was no one to till the ground.

Adam never tilled the ground of Eden. The proof of the text is in Gen 3:23 where it records Yahuah Elohim sent him out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from where he was taken

Adam's substance was from the adamah/ ground from where he was taken/created

The adam/man in the parable of the reign of Elohim only scattered the seed but didn't till the ground and hence didn't know the progress of the seed to the full growth

The land/arets yielded crops of itself first the blade, then the head and then the full grain. So who was tilling the ground?

Lev 25: 1 And יהוה spoke to Mosheh on Mount Sinai, saying,

2 “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, and say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall observe a Sabbath to יהוה.

3 ‘Six years you sow your field, and six years you prune your vineyard, and gather in its fruit,

4 but in the seventh year the land is to have a Sabbath of rest, a Sabbath to יהוה. Do not sow your field and do not prune your vineyard.

5 ‘Do not reap what grows of its own of your harvest, and do not gather the grapes of your unpruned vine, for it is a year of rest for the land.

6 ‘And the Sabbath of the land shall be to you for food, for you and your servant, and for your female servant and your hired servant, and for the stranger who sojourns with you,

Genesis records Yahuah Elohim caused a mist to rise up to water the ground

The Torah came later written on the 6 years sowing and 7th year Sabbath year rest for the land

The parable shows it was a Sabbatical year as Yahusha Himself was taking care of the harvest

The crop growing is recorded in 3 phases

The blade/dasha, then the head/shabalath and then the complete grain/shabalath

The word shabal means the flooding of the river which provides water to the surrounding crop fields

If we recollect, the garden of Eden had one river which divided into 4 heads and this river watered the garden of Eden

Gen 1: 10 And a river went out of Ěḏen to water the garden, and from there it divided and became four heads.

First the mist watered the ground and then the river which shows a continuity of Sabbatical years

The same can be seen in the parable of the reign of Elohim where the head and then the completed grain where the word for both is the same shabalath which we saw that it means the flooding of the river which provides water to the surrounding crop fields

While the parable states the man/adam put his sickle to the grain to harvest, we must understand that the Ben of Adam is Yahusha who does the harvesting

Rev 14:15 And another messenger came out of the Dwelling Place, crying with a loud voice to the One sitting on the cloud, “Send Your sickle and reap, because the hour has come for You to reap, because the harvest of the earth is ripe.”

16 And the One sitting on the cloud thrust in His sickle on the earth, and the earth was reaped.

Matthew 26: 28 “For this is My blood, that of the renewed covenant, which is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.

29 “But I say to you, I shall certainly not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on till that day when I drink it anew with you in the reign of My Father.”

Yahusha gave a very clear indication that he won’t drink of the fruit of the wine until the day He drinks it new with His people in the reign of His Father

Hence, from the time of the fulfillment or Mashiyach being the goal of the Torah, the harvest, right from the seed sprout to the harvesting is done by Yahusha Himself while adam/man only scatters the seed, sleeping and rising, he doesn't know or understand the work of Elohim

The scattering of seed shows the dispersion which is why the one river broke into 4 river heads to water every crop, grain, vine in the garden

Rev 2:7 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To him who overcomes a I shall give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of Elohim.”

I have listed this before, that when Adam and Chauah sinned, they were cast out of the garden of Eden where Eden means 'Delight/Pleasure' They were driven out and a flaming sword and Cherubims were kept guarding the way to the tree of life lest man eats of it (Gen 3:24)

The Torah pattern came with the Cherubims on the ark of the Covenant which contained the 2 tablets written by the finger of Yahuah, the pot that had the manna and Aharon's rod that budded with almonds

Only the high priest/kohen ha gadol had the right once a year to the Most Set Apart place where the ark was kept not without blood of goats/bulls

Yahusha being our Kohen ha Gadol entered with His own blood making a way for us to eat of the tree of Life and live forever

Adam and his wife were driven out and dwelt east of the garden where he built the mikphad altar on which its recorded Abel and Qayin sacrificed.

This was the place on mount Moriah where Abraham went to sacrifice Yitshaq and in place of Yitshaq offered the ram caught by its horns in the thickets

Gen 11 records the seed was scattered from the east to Shinar which is in Babylon. Abraham was born here in the Ur of Chaldees/ Babylon from where Yahuah brought him back to the land which was promised to his seed.

Gen 11: 1 And all the earth had one language and one speech.

2 And it came to be, as they set out from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinʽar, and they dwelt there.

By belief in Mashiyach, we journey back to the mikphad altar from where our fathers were scattered.

Yahusha was impaled on the stake at this very place on Mount of Olives where the mikphad altar was

The veil of the Mishkan was torn into 2 showing the way into the Most Set Apart place is in Mashiyach. He will take us into the Sabbatical rest perpetually in Himself

To eat of what grows of itself was the most important blessing of Yahuah on His people especially the poor and strangers in the land as they could gather and eat from anywhere in the land while in the 6 years of sowing and reaping, they could only eat from the corners of the fields left for them as per Torah

Consider how great the blessing is to be at the Marriage supper of the Lamb

Rev 22 :1 And he showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of Elohim and of the Lamb.

The crops are watered by the river of life flowing from the throne of the Lamb

The similarity of both the parables can be seen in the progression of the growth of the seed as thirty, sixty and hundredfold as stated in the Parable of the Sower and in the parable of the scattering of the seed it’s the blade/dasha, then the head/shabalath and then the complete grain/shabalath. The word shabalath comes from the word shabal & we saw it means the flooding of the river which provides water to the surrounding crop fields. Therefore, all the 4 seeds apart from seed which fell by the wayside didn’t sprout.

 1. Which fell on wayside (didn’t sprout) 2. Which fell on rock (sprouted) 3. Which fell among thorns (sprouted) & 4. Which fell on good soil (sprouted). Number 4 in scripture speaks of the scattering of the seed to the ends of the earth from where Yahuah brings back His elect into His fold.

The progression 30, 60, 100 in parable of the Sower & blade, head & complete grain in the parable of the scattering of the seed has number 3 which shows the will of Yahuah in revealing His plan of salvation.

Hence, the seed that fell is likened to the heart which was either wayside (al-yad ha derek), Rocky (salayim), Thorny (qotsim) & Good Soil (Tub adamah). In the renewed covenant it is the heart, which is circumcised and hence, Messiah likens the soil as the heart.

The word snatch comes from the root Hebrew word ‘chatap’ which means to ‘pull away’, to bind. The Greek word harpazo has the similar meaning ‘pull away’. The birds of prey do not harm the seed being falling on good soil or seed being sown in the derek/way. The hearer hears but doesn’t understand the mysteries of the kingdom of Yahuah, this is the only seed among the other 3 which didn’t sprout.

2. The seed that fell on rocky place

Matt 13:5 “And there was some that fell/naphal on the rocky places/salayim where there was not much soil, and it sprouted quickly, because it had no deep soil.”

Matt 13:6 “But it came to pass when the sun/shemesh shone, it was scorched and dried up, because it had no root.”

Matt 13:20 “And the sown/nazera on the rocky place is the one who hears the Word/Dabar and immediately receives it with joy.”

Matt 13:21 “But he does not have a root beneath him, so he arises for only for an hour. But when there is trouble and persecution on account of the Word/DABAR, he shall stumble/shakal in a moment.”

The passages at first glance seem to show a contradiction as He first says the seed fell/naphal and then Mashiyach later says the seed is sown/nazera on salayim/rocky places.

The Abary words need to be understood in the correct context of what it says. The seed indeed fell but the outcome was the Word/Dabar was received with joy. The word sown is ‘nazera’ (nun zayin resh ayin) and has the root word ‘nazar’ which means ‘consecrate/dedicate’. The Abary word ‘sala’ (samek lamed ayin) is used in OT for Mashiyach. Masha was to speak to the Sala/Rock but he struck it twice and water gushed out and because of this he was forbidden to enter the promised land.

The ‘sala’ spoken in the parable is a stronghold or high place as the root word ‘sal’ means ‘high’. Moreover, the verse in Matt 13:21 says ‘he/ya arises/qum for only an hour’

The seed is personified as ‘he arises’ for an hour. The hour in spiritual comparison is the hour of prayer i.e., the incense hour. The seed was dedicated/consecrated (nazar) but the shamash/sun scorched the plant as there was no root in it to be sustained

Rev 16:8  And the fourth messenger poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was given to him to burn men with fire

Rev 16:9  And men were burned with great heat, and they blasphemed the Name of Elohim who possesses authority over these plagues. And they did not repent, to give Him esteem.

Psa 121:6  The sun does not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night.

Those in Mashiyach will never be smitten by the sun. This seed appeared to be qodesh/set-apart after the flesh but when they are faced with the reality of the truth from the dabar they fall away as they are unable to bear the brilliance of the sun/shemesh. The face of Yahusha is termed as the sun shining in its strength

Rev 1:16  And in His right hand He held seven stars, and out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His face was as the sun shining in its strength.

Jas 1:10  but the rich in his humiliation, because as a flower of the field he shall pass away.

Jas 1:11  For the sun rose with burning heat, and withered the grass, and its flower fell, and its pretty appearance perished. So also the rich man shall fade away in his ways.

In the parable of the rich man and Alazar, we understand the rich man is Yasharal after the flesh who was rich in covenant, in promises, in the blessings their fathers were given etc yet the rich man failed to reach Abraham’s bosom, but Alazar (which means Elohim helped) the poor Gentile who desired the crumbs that fell from the rich mans table (the dabar bits and pieces needed for nourishment of the soul) was carried to Abraham’s bosom (Luke 16:19-31)

3. The seed that fell among thorns

Matt13:7 “There was some that fell among the thorns/qotsim, and the thorns/qotsim came up and crowded it out.”

Matt 13:22 “And the one sown among the thorns is he who hears the Word, but the worries of this age and the guile of wealth crowd out the Word, so that he shall have no fruit.”

The word ‘qots’ also means ‘end/border’

Gen 3:18  and the ground shall bring forth thorns/qots and thistles for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field.

Gen 3:19  “By the sweat of your face you are to eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For dust you are, and to dust you return.”

Yahuah cursed the ground/adamah that the ground would bring forth thorns and thistles for Adam and his race.

Matt5:18 “For, truly, I say to you, until the heavens and the earth pass away, not one qots of a yod shall pass from the Torah until all has been established.”

Speaking of establishing Torah and the Nebim, Yahusha said He came to fulfil the Torah and the Prophets and until the heavens and the earth pass away one qots of a yod shall not pass from the Torah till all has been established. He was the one to be pierced with, yod is the hand and he would fulfil Torah and Prophets in His death. We are called not only to rule with Him but to suffer for His name’s sake as well. Here the seed that fell among the qotsim/thorns was pierced not with the sufferings of Yahusha but the cares of this world represented by the ground/adamah which was cursed.

4. The seed that fell in good soil

The seed in the good/tub soil/adamah is reaching the fullness of Abraham as seen in the 30,60 & 100 progression.

Number 30:

We saw the priest began his priestly office at age 30. This number can also represent the sacrificial blood of Yahusha, as He was betrayed by Yahudah Qeriyoth for thirty silver coins. This act was a fulfilment of prophecy (Zechariah 11:12)

The prophet Ezekiel begins his book of the same name in the thirtieth year (which likely referenced his age at the time - Ezekiel 1:1). It is at this time he receives his first recorded vision from Elohim, known as the "wheel within a wheel" vision with likeness of a Son of man sitting on the throne whose description he writes.

Eze 1:1  And it came to be in the thirtieth year, in the fourth month, on the fifth of the new moon, as I was among the exiles by the River Kear, the heavens were opened and I saw visions of Elohim.

Daud was 30 years when he began to reign and Yahusha was 30 years when he began his ministry and is called the Son of Daud. A tribe from which the priest after the order of Malchitsedek arose, whom Masha never mentioned

Yahushap/Yoseph was 30 years old when he stood before Pharaoh as one who would redeem his father and his brothers and kinsmen from the great famine which would come upon the whole earth

Gen 41:46  Now Yosěph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh sovereign of Mitsrayim. And Yosěph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Mitsrayim.

2Sa 5:4  Dawi was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

Number 60:

Number 60 is derived from the fact that it is considered the threshold of when a person enters the last major phase of their life. The emissary Shaul warned Timothy that the assembly should not financially support widows less than 60 years old. This was because those who were younger were considered able to remarry or strong enough to support themselves

1Ti 5:9  Do not enrol a widow unless she is over sixty years of age, having been the wife of one man,

1Ti 5:10  well reported for good works, if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the feet of the set-apart ones, if she has assisted the afflicted, if she has closely followed every good work.

Under the Old Covenant, a sixty-year-old male could redeem himself from a vow of serving Yahuah by paying 15 shekels to the temple. A woman who was 60 could redeem herself from such a vow for only ten shekels (Leviticus 27:1 - 2, 7). This compares to younger adult males who had to pay fifty shekels while younger women paid thirty (verses 3 - 4).

Lev 27:3  when your evaluation is of a male from twenty years old up to sixty years old, then your evaluation shall be fifty sheqels of silver, according to the sheqel of the set-apart place.

Lev 27:4  ‘And if it is a female, then your evaluation shall be thirty sheqels;

Lev 27:6  and if from a new moon old up to five years old, then your evaluation for a male shall be five sheqels of silver, and for a female your evaluation shall be three sheqels of silver;

Lev 27:7  and if from sixty years old and above, if it is a male, then your evaluation shall be fifteen sheqels, and for a female ten sheqels.

The month old to 5 years & 60 years and above had the least redemption price to pay from the vow made to Yahuah showing that the ages were significant. The youngest (month old to 5 years) a beginning of a life’s journey and 60 years and above, an entrance to the end of life’s journey.

Number 100:

We already saw Abraham was 100 years old when the promised seed Yitshaq was born to him

Yahusha spoke of not one sheep will be lost, the shepherd would go in search after the one sheep leaving the 99 sheep to bring it back to the fold. Hence, 100 is a complete number

Hundred manifestly denotes what is full; for it is said, there shall be no more an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days, and a child and a sinner of a hundred years; that is, when his state is full

Isa 65:20  “No more is an infant from there going to live but a few days, nor an old man who does not complete his days, for the youth dies one hundred years old, but the sinner being one hundred years old shall be lightly esteemed.

Every one that hath left houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit eternal life

Mat 19:29  “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My Name’s sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

Where also a hundred denotes what is full, which number would not have been mentioned unless it had signified that. The same is true where the Adon speaks by parable concerning the debtors, that one owed a hundred baths of oil, and the other a hundred cors of wheat (Luke 16:5-7)
